Recap of August Meeting!

Happy Fall!  Here are some photos from our August meeting:

1.  Round Robin Quilts:  we have three Round Robin quilts in progress, and they are all beautiful!  Once they become approximately 36 inches square, they will be turned into charity quilts for Project Linus.

2.  Block of the Month:  for August's Block of the Month, everyone was asked to make one or more blocks using text fabrics.  Otherwise, the pattern and color choices were open to anything!  Our members came up with some incredible blocks in all different styles and colors.  One lucky member took home the bunch!

For September's block of the month, we are making simple "Roman Stripe" blocks in any color or pattern you choose.  You can see the info HERE

3.  We discussed the topic of "what is modern fabric" by showing lots of examples of interesting fabrics and debating what makes something modern vs. retro vs. traditional.  Great discussion!

For September's meeting, we will discuss "what are modern patterns."  Bring in interesting quilt patterns (both traditional and modern) to show everyone!

We also had a beautiful show and tell of a member's collection of authentic feedsack fabrics.  They were all incredibly gorgeous!

4.  Virtual Quilting Bee:  Quilting Bee members were asked to make "library" blocks for this month.  They turned out great!

For September, the Quilting Bee members are making a Tallahassee Block.  You can find the pattern HERE.

5.   Show and Tell:  here are some great Show and Tell photos!

We look forward to seeing you at the next meeting this Saturday, September 21st, from 10am to 12pm at StitchCraft!

MQG News.  The Modern Quilt Guild world is expanding rapidly; there are 1500+ members worldwide and 7 Florida guilds – Sarasota, Central Florida, Orlando, Gainesville, Tampa, Jacksonville and us!  The national guild is offering its 3rd annual fabric challenge from September to December 2013, this year featuring Riley Blake Designs.  Each official MQG member will receive 6 fat eighths.  Other events in the modern quilt world included the NYC double wedding ring challenge  and the International Quilt Festival Pet Postcard Project.

Shop Announcements.  This year’s focus is on “hexies”.  Books, patterns and a template were shown to help quilters create projects using the popular shape.

Sharing.    Denise displayed 2 fabrics she created on spoonflower.com, with motifs from her son’s wedding invitation.  Barbara brought examples of past round robins in which she had participated.

Program.  Nan developed and shared a fantastically put together Power Point presentation on modern applique, including colors, designs and techniques, with many beautiful examples from the internet.  Marta will be our September presenter, featuring Flikr and  Pinterest.  In addition, we plan to flush out thoughts on the question “What is modern fabric.  Members are encouraged to bring examples of what they consider modern fabric.

Door Prizes.  Three were happily taken home – if you bring one , you can get one.  This is a great way to re-purpose a quilting item in your collection.

Block Swap.  Participants displayed colorful  16 ½” blocks featuring squares.  Each person made two, one for herself and the other to give to another member.  Next month, the block should include circles in bright colors.

Block Party.  The  group brought in their red and cream Xs and Os, ranging from applique to piecing to embroidery.  Joan was thrilled with the variety and promises to put together the quilt as soon as all blocks are received.

Patty is the next recipient, asking for one  16 ½ x 18 ½”  asterisk block using three fabrics which she provided from her designs and others according to the specification handout provided.  We now have a wait list to participate in this group.
The meeting concluded with Show and Tell.   Next meeting is September 21st at Quilter’s Choice.
