November Meeting - Things to Bring
Our inaugural meeting in November is coming up in less than a month! Each meeting, it would be great to have the attendees make and bring something to the meeting. Accordingly, here are November's "things to bring":
1. Make a nametag for yourself!
You can make the nametag as simple or complicated as you like. Try some embroidery, piecing, or just use a marker on some colorful fabric. This is a perfect opportunity to try creating a nametag using Tonya's new book, Word Play Quilts.
HERE, HERE and HERE are other great photos of some nametag ideas.
2. Bring a fat quarter (or two) of fun fabric!
Modern and/or whimsical fabrics are preferred. We will be doing a Yankee Swap, so get ready to share and swipe your favorites. If you bring two fat quarters, you will have two chances to participate. Check out this Youtube video of a Yankee Swap marriage proposal. Too cute!
Of course, please bring the standard items for each meeting as well. You can find the general list HERE. See you soon!

Let's Get Talking: Introduce Yourself!
Welcome to the new South Florida Mod website! For all of the members of the old website, please note that we will be phasing out that website soon. Please re-send us your contact info so we can updated an updated member roster (click on the "Join the Guild" page for instructions).
One of the great parts of this blog is that it gives quilters the opportunity to reach out to other quilters in the guild! To that end, we would like to get everyone talking and introducing themselves. Here are a few questions to get you started:
1. How long have you been quilting?
2. What are your favorite styles or quilting techniques? Wonky log cabins, raw-edge applique, traditional piecing, art quilts, etc. Photos are encouraged!
3. Why are you interested in the South Florida Mod?
4. What would you like to see the South Florida Mod do? Swaps, bees, charity quilts, show and tell, etc?
Feel free to respond in the comments section of this post, or email us to become a blog contributor and create a whole new post! Photos or blog links are always encouraged. :)

Photos of Modern Quilting
So you think you may want to join South Florida Mod but still don't know what modern quilting really looks like? Here are some photos of my recent works, as samples:
As you can see, "Modern" quilting has a broad range of styles. It encompasses updates to traditional patterns, using bold, bright colors, making "wonky" or freeform blocks, or anything simply made in "modern" times. It's all modern to us!
The internet has been an incredible source of inspiration for modern quilters, who use blogs and Flickr photo galleries to display their work! For more great examples of modern quilting, check out the Flickr gallery called Fresh Modern Quilts:
Followed a free pattern online and used a Layer Cake of fabrics. |
Classic English paper piecing using very large hexagons. |
Log-cabin style nautical-themed blocks for a baby quilt. |
Followed a purchased pattern and changed it slightly. |
Scrappy star blocks for a virtual quilting bee. |
Batik blocks from a kit. |
Traditional medallion quilt made with original pattern and modern fabrics. |
Online challenge quilt using surprise fabrics and original pattern. |
