Photos of Modern Quilting

So you think you may want to join South Florida Mod but still don't know what modern quilting really looks like? Here are some photos of my recent works, as samples:

Followed a free pattern online and used a Layer Cake of fabrics.
Classic English paper piecing using very large hexagons.
Log-cabin style nautical-themed blocks for a baby quilt.
Followed a purchased pattern and changed it slightly.
Scrappy star blocks for a virtual quilting bee.
Batik blocks from a kit.
Traditional medallion quilt made with original pattern and modern fabrics.
Online challenge quilt using surprise fabrics and original pattern.
As you can see, "Modern" quilting has a broad range of styles.  It encompasses updates to traditional patterns, using bold, bright colors, making "wonky" or freeform blocks, or anything simply made in "modern" times. It's all modern to us!

The internet has been an incredible source of inspiration for modern quilters, who use blogs and Flickr photo galleries to display their work! For more great examples of modern quilting, check out the Flickr gallery called Fresh Modern Quilts:

How to Post on the Blog

We have set up South Florida Mod as a blog format.  How does this differ from a normal website?

Member participation!  Members of South Florida Mod are encouraged to post photos and other items to the blog as often as possible.  It's a great way to show off your latest projects, let members know about quilting events in the area, ask advice (we've all had the "eek, how do I quilt this" conundrum), and post photos of your challenge and swap blocks for the guild meetings.  We also intend to use it for announcements about guild meetings.

If you don't have a blog, this is a great way to show off your projects online!  If you do have a blog, you can link back to your own blog and increase your readership!  You can also add your blog to the Blogroll on the right-side of the page.

As an example of how we intend to use this site for South Florida Mod, please visit the NYC Metro Mod Quilt Guild (the NYC chapter of the Modern Quilting Guild).  They have a great, active site that members constantly use!  Click HERE for their blog.

Welcome!

Welcome to the South Florida Modern Quilt Guild! The Guild (also known as "South Florida Mod") is a laid-back community of quilters who want to "quilt outside the box." We're energetic, fun and looking for quilters who share in our enthusiasm.

You can read more about South Florida Mod on the About Us page. You can also read more about the modern quilting movement in the What is Modern Quilting page. That definition of Modern Quilting is rather narrowly focused on freeform, wonky and abstract quilting, and we are trying to be all-inclusive. Traditional quilters who may not fit in the "modern" category but want to expand their skills or just learn more are certainly welcome to attend!

We encourage you to join South Florida Mod by clicking on the Join The Guild page and following those steps. It is fast, free and easy. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us any time at southfloridamod@gmail.com. We look forward to seeing you at the upcoming meetings in November and December 2011!
