Jupiter Modern Quilt Guild Meeting, May 17, 2014

Notes from Jupiter Modern Quilt Guild Meeting, May 17, 2014:

It was a small group meeting this month, with many of our northern friends heading back home for the summer, but quite a lovely group and meeting nevertheless.

We were reminded that QuiltCon, to be held February 19 -22 in Austin , is going to be an exciting time, with an inspiring list of presenters and teachers.  We have two members planning to attend, so those who can’t swing the trip to Texas can at least hear all about it from our fortunate representatives.

We were asked to share our ugly quilts.  Unfortunately there were none.  None of the so-called ugly quilts shared at the meeting were ugly, although the black olive pillowcase was a tad suspect. We discovered that one quilter’s ugly is another quilter’s lovely.  Most of the examples seemed to stem from stepping outside the maker’s normal color comfort zone – sometimes a good exercise to undertake.  And sometimes, not.

The Block Party featured slab piecing in black and white, with a touch of red.  The results were outstanding.  For next month, we’ll make more, to ensure that Angela has enough blocks for a good sized quilt.  Since the Block Party is nearing completion, we are going to come up with a new idea and settle on the specifics of that at our next meeting.

The Block Swap featured Shoo Fly blocks in red, yellow and blue.  It was fun to see a classic block interpreted in a modern way.  Next month, the challenge is to use a basket block in violet, blue and red.  It’s going to be interesting to see all the different interpretations of that!

The highlight of the meeting was Kathy Tucker’s demonstration of adding circles to a quilt.  Kathy has an excellent demonstration of the technique, and an awesome quilt example to share.
