August Meeting Topic - Negative Space

Wikipedia defines Negative space, in art, is the space around and between the subject(s) of an image. Negative space may be most evident when the space around a subject, not the subject itself, forms an interesting or artistically relevant shape, and such space occasionally is used to artistic effect as the "real" subject of an image.

The Modern Quilt Guild states that Modern quilts have several characteristics which include, but are not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work.

At the SFMQG meeting on Saturday Aug 15th 2015 the Topic will be Negative Space.

Read Between the Lines by Stephanie Ruyle - 3rd Place Negative Space - QuiltCon 2015

We will be discussing and demonstrating the design of these quilts including the quilting of the Negative Space.

We will be asking for volunteers to interactively try these designs - bring your thinking caps.

Everyone would love to see your Negative Space quilts - please bring them to show & tell. Even if we have seen them before we’d like to view them again as they relate to the topic.

See you on Saturday!

  1. Thank you for featuring my quilt as an example of negative space. I had a blast making it, if you don't count the few scary moments of inserting those skinny little strips of fabric. Hope you have fun with your discussion, I wish I could attend!!!!

    2. It truly would be my honor to attend IF I was in your neighborhood. My mom lives in South Florida, but across the state. But you never know, us quilters are an adventurous bunch!
Have fun at your meeting and if anyone has a specific question regarding my quilt, please feel free to send it my way. I'll do my very best to come up with an explanation.

  2. Great quilt and I've been looking at millions of negative space quilts for this discussion. Congrats on your award/ribbon at QuiltCon! Love your blog - especially the name.

    1. Thank you Charlotte. I wear threads (on my clothes) proudly. My kids not so much, and the dog could care less. It was an honor to receive a ribbon at QuiltCon and (just this week) to win 1st place (in the modern submissions category) at AQS Quiltweek in Grand Rapids with the same quilt. As I mentioned to Allison, if anyone has burning questions after the guild meeting please send them my way. I'll do my best to answer them.
      Have a great weekend!

    2. Stephanie Congrats on the 1st place at AQS Grand Rapids - I had a quilt in the show too - fun to showoff our work! The Negative Space discussion and interactive program went well yesterday. I think everyone enjoyed it - I did giving it. When I put your quilt on the screen I heard a collective intake of breath! We have announced a challenge for next year and I'm encouraging the members to make quilts they might want to enter in QuiltCon or other shows. Please let me know when you will be in South Florida visiting your mom - maybe we can schedule a talk and/or workshop. We visited Colorado last year and just loved it - enjoy the rest of your summer.
